Para Fiction - EPISODE III: PANDEMIC - EP Review

Brighton punk-rap outfit Para Fiction have released their much anticipated 3rd EP, 'Episode III: Pandemic'.

Aptly named for our current circumstances 'PANDEMIC' was actually planned much before as this release acts as the final in a trilogy of EPs put out by the guys over the last 12 months, talking on this 'episode' they explained its definitly a darker take on their usual music but that's just all part of its story commenting on the dog-eat-dog world we live in and the slow demise in humanity we face. The duo made up of rapper James and producer Jules, otherwise known as Anti Jambo and Coding dude, have said time and time again their influences cross many genres (with the likes of Rage Against The Machine, Beastie Boys and The Fall just to name a few) and this release is just even more evidence towards that.

At just under 20 minutes this 6 track EP weaves through the loud and proud punks and down towards the UKs (and specifically Brightons) DIY underground rap scene, opening track 'ROY' gives us zoned out instrumentals and frantic, snarely vocals that dance between a heavy rap anthem to start the night and something left playing in the background at the 5am afters and the chorus is certainly one to still be stuck in your head when you wake up. Next comes 'QUEST' a ghostly, melancholic number taking about smoking weed, moshing and contemplating life decorated with wavey guitars and a down-spoken feature from Renelle 893. 'Project 47' takes the 3rd spot, the first single released from Episode III in early march it tackles the eventual apocalypse of mankind according to the guys themselves, bordering on grunge the scuzzy guitar lines run alongside it's hard hitting flow until it all collides into a feral explosion of grimey backings and newcore-esque vocals definitly making it a standout track from this selection. Angsty guitars and spaced out synths take us to track 4, 'ANTI-BODY (ANTI EVERYBODY), full of fast paced lyrics and the occasional gang vocals this number swerves back towards the duos well stated rap roots no doubt helped by Jack Jetson appearance as the EPs second featured artist. 'IGNORANCE' makes up one of the heavier tracks here, hard hitting vocals shouted straight through their teeth make up most of this gritty song until we get 'PANDEMIC's final feature from good friend and common collaborator Sly Fieri changing the tone and tempo completely with a clean quick finish. The final track 'PEAK' opens with an array of paranoid noises before a slow guitar lead beat takes over, then its heavy beats over that signature set of roughed up lungs that make this song remind us of dark sweaty venues, warm cans of lager and a fucking good night (the good old times now right?).

This EP is a collection of creatively expanding songs that's taken parts from a plethora of their favourite bands and some of ours too, mixing genres and pushing boundaries this duo are only in the beginning of their journey and we can't wait for what's to come.

'Episode III: PANDEMIC' is out now via the bands own independent label Parastic.
