Shame - Leicester - Review

Stood between an usual littering of grey and balding heads dressed in polo shirts and hearing aids in a dark, sweaty basement in Leicester I witnessed what many are calling the revival of old-school punk and I can't help but agree that as the older generation turned up in force to support this band these 5 young angry South Londoners are the life support this genre desperately needed.

Striding onto stage in a button up shirt front man; Charlie Steen, introduces the group as 'a Christian Rock band from South London' before starting the set with album opener Dust On Trial, already pacing the stage with mic in hand, fan favourite One Rizla is introduced in irony as he jokes they needed to release a pop song to make some money in this industry before finishing the song soaking in sweat and shirtless, making his crowdsurf halfway through the room an intense experience for all during pre-album released The Lick, then instructing the crowd to 'Come closer, enjoy yourselves' throughout another single Tasteless. 'Brainstorm amongst yourselves during this one', Steen says, revealing the following song is brand new, unreleased and unnamed before an echoing riff fills the room proving new music means business. Trying to soak the sweat from his head Steen starts the next song, Angie, with a towel draped over his head leaving only a musical glory hole for the mic. Batting along to the solid drum beat with the mic lead around his neck. Lampoon is the second to last track of this short, sweaty set before the lads finish on classic Gold Hole with Steen singing the chorus in the arms of the crowd, leaving nobody sure who's sweat is whose, thanking the fans for coming and confirming their return in November. This London 5 piece's first ever headline show in Leicester will be remembered when Shame grow to the highs they truely deserve to be at.
