Talk Show - These People - EP Review

With barely a handful of songs under their belt South London outfit Talk Show have finally put out their debut EP 'These People' through Council Records. In just over 12 minutes Talk Show really put their cards on the table and show us what they're made of, a short but indulging collection of post-punk, goth and darkwave inspired tunes sold by a loud and proud mancunian voice and a plethora of noises behind this is a tale of love, despair and observation of me, you and everyone else.

Opening the tracklist with single 'Stress' throws nothing but post-punk straight in your face in the form of a heart on your sleeve kinda song full of attitude making a heafty start to the bands first collection. 'Atomica', the EPs second number is where the angry punk in them really comes out to play though, full of snarling vocals, deep basslines and a page of lyrics that wouldn't go amiss at Manchester's classic Free Trade Hall. Next up 'Banshee' the first track released from 'These People', probably the most finely tuned on this release and lyrically a pleasure to listen to. 'I had a dream we were dancing in the dark together, waltzing holding hands forever' starts an ardent tale of a relationship without progression. Taking pieces of goth-pop and dark wave that Peter Murphy and co would usually be wallowing into the mic, a mixture of melodic guitars and melancholic articulation definitely make this one of the bands stronger efforts so far. The closing number in 'Petrolhead' goes back to their more rooted sound of drawling angst, a sour riff opens the song alone before being joined by an ever impressing set of drums then finally they just letting loose, a crescendo to the EP in full, inc gang vocals, wonderfully rhythmic guitars and some of the more questionable lines on the record it certainly gives an appropriate finish.
Being their freshman drop only makes us more excited about this band that are already well on their way to the big stages and what they've got to come.
'These People' is out now via Council Records.
